Can You Improve Your Sense of Happiness?

happinessWhether we’re mindful of it or not, we often believe that happiness is an internal response to something that is external. However, true happiness originates from within. Relying on external things to make us happy will never lead to a pure understanding of what happiness real means in our life. So, the question is; How do we begin to acquire true happiness? Well, the answer is two fold. It requires a change in mindset and a change in behavior. Here are a few ways in which you can begin to do that on a daily basis:

Be Grateful – There is always something to be grateful for, but sometimes we get so caught up in the whirlwind of live’s circumstances that we shift our attention only to the things that bring about negative feelings. Take some time every day to acknowledge the things that deserve your gratitude and life’s stressors won’t seem so enormous.

Be Kind – There is something intrinsically magical about engaging in acts of kindness. Regardless of your world view, it simply feels good to do good. It gives you a sense of accomplishment and makes you feel better about your very own existence. Make an effort to brighten someone else’s say and yours will be brightened in turn.

Be Optimistic – This one is probably the hardest for the majority because it’s completely reliant upon your will to hope for the best. Now, it’s unrealistic to say that things will never turn out badly for you if you’re optimistic. However, there will ways be something positive to take away from all of life’s experiences. Know that things won’t always go your way, but shift your attention toward the good in everything and stop relying on your expectation of negative outcomes. If you only look for negative then you’ll only find negative. If you decide to look for positive, then you’ll surely find it.

Be Social – We were not meant to live in isolation. Sure, some need more down time than others, but a life without close relationships is void of a significant source of joy and encouragement. We need meaningful conversations, love and physical touch from others. Begin making time for social outings with others who have a positive influence over you. Quality time with quality people will certainly lift your spirits and make you a happier person.

Be Healthy – Our bodies are designed to run a certain way. We cannot have optimal physical, emotional and hormonal health if we are leading an unhealthy lifestyle. Educate yourself on what it means to sustain a healthy diet and add some exercise into your routine. You don’t have to buy a gym membership or hire a personal trainer to improve your physical health. Go for a walk after dinner, ride your bike, play a pickup game of basketball at the park, etc. Be creative and find a way to move your body. Even just a little bit will begin to improve your health and sense of well being.
