Sometimes when we hear about proximity ID badges and smart ID badges, it’s easy to assume that they are the same thing. In fact, though they are similar, they are not using the same technology. To help you make an informed decision about which is best for you, here are a few differences between the two:
Proximity ID Badges
Smart ID badges can carry several functions whereas the proximity ID badges can really only provide one. They communicate the badge’s ID or facility code number to the badge reader. This allows the badge to be verified by a remote computer. Since quite a few readers only read the ID number, they do not require the memory that is available in smart ID badges. These ID badges are typically used for door access control.
Smart ID Badges
As I previously mentioned, smart badges can serve more than one function. They are capable to providing identification, authentication and storing personal information about the badge holder or organization. These badges have this added functionality because of the memory and microchip which is contained within the badge. Additionally, the smart badges can be programmed to be used as a pre-paid cash card.
