Here at Fullidentity, we make it known that our printers are capable of over-the-edge printing. The reason why we bring that to light is because not all printers have this capability. However, many of our customers have asked us to clarify what over-the-edge printing really means. Simply put, over-the-edge printing is the ability to print past the edge of an ID card through a retransfer process.
Over-the-edge printing is typically preferred by customers for two main reasons. 1). Since this type of printing goes past the edge of the card, it removes the white border that is typically seen in other printing methods. 2). It delivers better image quality in addition to offering more durable and longer lasting print results.
How Does it Work?
The retransfer printing process actually prints the image onto a clear film which is then retransferred onto the card’s surface. This method allows for the entirety of the care surface to be covered while prohibiting the printhead from directly contacting the card. This process is especially good for technology cards such as proximity cards and smart cards because the absence of direct contact from the printhead.
