How to Create Your Own ID Cards

How to Create Your Own ID CardsSo, you need to implement an ID card program for your employees. You’re probably asking, “Where do I even begin?” Well, you’re not alone. We can help! There are a few simple steps to get you up and running. Just think of it in terms of a standard desktop printer. Though it functions differently, it’s just as easy to use. Once you get everything setup properly, you’ll find that it’s not nearly as difficult as it seems. Here’s what you need to do.

STEP 1 – Identify Your Needs

First, start with defining what you need. How will you use your ID cards and how do you want them to look?

  • Will they be full color, or do you want them to be black and white?
  • Will they include a photo?
  • Will you want information on both sides of the card?
  • Will they need to contain security features?
  • Will information need to be stored on the card?

Answering these questions will help you understand what type of card technology and printer you’ll need.

STEP 2 – Purchase Your ID Card System

Once you know what you need to get the results you want, you’ll need to purchase your system. The system will include the following:

  • An ID card printer
  • Printer ink ribbon
  • ID card software for your computer
  • A Camera (if you’re using photos on your cards)
  • ID cards

All of the items can be purchased individually or as a complete system. The only other piece of equipment you’ll need is a computer, which I’m assuming you already have. If you do not have a computer, you’ll need to purchase one of those as well. There are systems available for both Mac and PC.

STEP 3 – Install ID Card Software & Setup Your Printer

Once you have your system and you’ve decided where you want to set it up, the user’s manual will provide step by step instructions on how to get everything installed and setup properly. The user’s manual will bring clarity on the following:

  • Installing software
  • Setting up your printer
  • Setting up your camera
  • Installing ink ribbon
  • Loading cards into the card hopper
  • Etc.

STEP 4 – Design Your ID Cards

Once everything is setup, you’re ready to create your ID card design! Your system will come with a variety of ID card templates that you can use and/or customize. This will allow you to import your photo and add any additional information that you desire.

STEP 5 – Print Your ID Cards

Once you’ve finalized your design and have added all of the necessary information, click “Print.” It’s as easy as that!
