When it comes to printing ID cards, it can be easy to get lost in all of the options that are available to you. You’re faced with options like lamination, accessories, magnetic stripes, signature strips and whole slew of other details. However, choosing your card size is a bit easier decision due to fewer options. Here are two distinctions to consider:
CR79 and CR80 Cards
CR79 and CR80 are in reference to the actual dimensions of the card. The CR80 cards are size of the typical credit card or photo ID cards that you see on a daily basis which measure 3.375 inches x 2.125 inches)
There is, however, some slight variation in terms of thickness or “mil” of the card. Mil equates to .001 or an inch. For example:
- CR80.10 = 1/100 of an inch in thickness.
- CR80.20 = 2/100 of an inch in thickness.
- CR80.30 = 3/100 of an inch in thickness.
The CR79 cards measure in at 3.303 inches x 2.051 inches in size and are most commonly used with direct-to-card printers for proximity and technology ID cards. It’s also important to keep in mind that use of the CR79 cards will require a compatible printer.
Overall, the CR80 card size is the most common and highly regarded, however you will certainly be getting a high quality product regardless of which size you choose.
