Printer Supplies: How Long Before They Expire?

Printer Supplies: How Long Before They Expire? If you want to keep you printer happy and functioning well, you obviously need to give it what it needs to do it’s job. That includes cards, ink ribbon, a cleaning kit, etc. But, do those printer supplies and accessories last forever? Is it a good idea to buy in bulk?

Can My Printer Supplies Expire?

In short, the answer is yes. However, the exact expiration period will vary from product to product. Generally speaking, manufacturers estimate that the lifespan of these products are about one year.

Now, products may still be usable to some degree after their expiration date, but ribbons are more likely to tear and cause print error after their expiration. Cleaning kits don’t “expire” per se, but the alcohol within the swabs will dry up and become unusable.

Proper Storage & Handling of Printer Supplies

All printer supplies should be stored in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight. They should also be stored in their original, sealed packaging to protect against debris and dust. Dust and debris cause lots of printing errors and can deteriorate the quality of the product. Proper storage will help to prolong the life of your supplies and save you money on the long run.

Properly handling methods should be used during the print process as well. Directly touching the surfaces of the cards and ribbon can transfer oil and debris, which can result in reduced print quality and printing errors. This can also result in damage to the printhead over time.
