Many customers that we’ve interacted with, who print their own ID cards, often go about the process never understanding what their cards are made of and why the materials are important. Here are a few key things you should know about ID card materials, especially if you’re printing ID cards in-house.
Standard PVC ID Cards
The most common ID cards are made of a PVC plastic material that’s quite durable and designed to endure the wear and tear of daily activity. However, they do allow for some give and can bend or break when placed under enough pressure.
Eco-Friendly ID Cards
The eco-friendly ID cards are also a quality option, and are the perfect solution for the organizations that want to be environmentally conscious. Here are two eco-friendly ID card options:
Recycled PVC cards – These cards are made from 100% recycled PVC plastic material and come available with magnetic stripe.
- Biodegradable PVC cards – These cards are made from biodegradable material and they print and preform equally as well or better than standard PVC cards.
Composite ID Cards
If you’re planning to do laminated ID cards, you’ll need to use PVC/Poly composite cards instead of the standard PVC cards. The lamination process requires that the card be able to handle more heat from the printhead during printing. This composite material is designed to withstand higher amounts of heat to prevent the ID cards from being warped in the printing process.
